Wildland Firefighter Training Courses Offered at FVCC
In partnership with the Wildland Firefighter Training Institute (WFTI), the Continuing Education Center at Flathead Valley Community College will offer a basic firefighter training course April 25 through 28.
Basic Firefighter Training: S-130/S-190/L180/I100/is700a/WCT is designed to teach entry-level firefighters the foundational skills universal to all wildland firefighters. The course is offered as an introduction to the management structure of wildland fire operations and the national standards involved in hazardous assignments. Students will learn the basic elements of how a wildland fire behaves, the factors that contribute to the start and spread of wildland fires and how and when safe tactics can be applied.
Students who successfully complete the course will be given a course completion certificate. A Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) Incident Qualification Card will be issued to students that complete the required classes as well as the Work Capacity Test (WCT), qualifying them as an entry level wildland firefighter for the 2014 season. The WCT requires the completion of a three-mile walk in less than 45 minutes while carrying a 45 pound pack. Successful completion of the WCT is not a requirement to attend the course; however, it is a requirement to receive FFT2 qualification.
The Wildland Firefighter Training Institute (WFTI) provides the wildland firefighter with a premier system of qualification management and collaborative training. Classes are delivered through a network of highly skilled firefighters dedicated to excellence and the advancement of the community. All courses are National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) approved. For information about qualifications, membership, the Work Capacity Test and more, visit www.wftraininginstitute.com.
The basic firefighter training course will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 142 inside the Broussard Center on the FVCC campus. The cost to attend is $280, and the registration deadline is April 15. For more information or to register, call 756-3832 or visit www.fvcc.edu/wtregistration.
