New FVCC Summer Experience Offers Free College Credits for High School Students

Flathead Valley Community College will offer local high school students a unique new way to earn free college credits this summer through its new Summer Experience program.

Designed to give participating students an authentic college experience, the five-week program will include a three-credit college course, lunch, career exploration, a service project and intramural sports activities.  In addition to free college credits, the Summer Experience program will include lunch, supplies, books and an FVCC bag and t-shirt.

Students will have the opportunity to pick from one of two tracks depending on their interests.  Track 1, “In the Spotlight,” includes enrollment in either Introduction to Public Speaking or Introduction to Theatre.  Track 2, “Make it Count!” includes enrollment in Math for Liberal Arts.

Not only will the program provide a free way for any local high school student to explore college early, FVCC President Jane Karas, Ph.D., says the program is intended to have the more significant benefit of helping students complete their educational goals.

“The Summer Experience will provide the opportunity to earn college credits at no cost, which is a significant benefit to our local high school students,” said Karas.  “Studies show that high school students who have already earned six or more college credits before enrolling as college freshmen are more likely to complete their college degrees.”

Open to students entering their junior or senior year of high school this fall, the half-day program will run July 14 through August 15, three days per week.  Applications are due May 30 and enrollment in the program is limited, so participants are encouraged to apply early.  Applications can be picked up from high school guidance counselors, from the Admissions Office at FVCC or online at www.fvcc.edu/summerexperience.  For more information, contact Elizabeth Romain at 756-3923 or eromain@fvcc.edu.
