Highlights from FVCC Board of Trustees May Meeting
The Flathead Valley Community College Board of Trustees met May 23 for its regularly scheduled monthly meeting.
Clerk of the District Monica Settles administered the oath of office to the recently elected Trustee candidates Robert A. Nystuen, Thomas K. Harding, John M. Phelps and Shannon Lund.
Newly elected Student Government President Danyal Wendt introduced herself and announced the new officers for the 2011-2012 academic year.
In action items, the Board approved to submit a bid for its new Maintenance/Storage Building. The new building will free up two of the Occupational Trades Building bays currently used for storage and maintenance so they can be used for teaching occupational programs. The bid will be awarded by the end of June, and the building is expected to be completed by November.
The Board’s Finance and Audit Committee reported that the Montana Board of Regents approved the college’s tuition and fees proposal. It also announced that the college is currently working on the student housing lease agreement with Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
The Board scheduled its biyearly retreat for June 20 from noon to 5 p.m. The Board adopted the proposed 2011-2012 meeting schedule.
The Board elected the following members to serve as officers for the coming year: Robert A. Nystuen—Board Chair; John M. Phelps—Board Vice-Chair; and Ralene Sliter—Secretary to the Board. The Board approved the reappointment of Monica Settles as Clerk of District.
FVCC President Jane Karas announced that FVCC founder Bill McClaren and his wife, Lois, were honored with this year’s Eagle Award. A record crowd of nearly 300 guests attended the President’s Donor Dinner May 12. Karas recognized the culinary arts students for their “phenomenal job” preparing and serving the meal. She thanked the local legislators for restoring some of the funding for community colleges that was initially cut from the state budget. Karas reported on the Montana Board of Regents meeting at the FVCC campus last week. She remarked on the Regents’ positive comments on the college’s facilities, students and their achievements and support from the community.
Karas reflected on the college’s record commencement, stating that she felt a greater energy from the graduates compared to all of the previous commencements she has attended.
“It was one of those perfect evenings that remind us why we do what we do,” she said.
