FVCC Offers Training on Assisting Veterans with Transition to Civilian Life
The Veterans’ Center at Flathead Valley Community College invites the community to attend a free workshop, “Our Veterans, Their Transition, Practical Strategies to Assist Them,” presented by Dr. Peter Schmidt on February 13.
As of March 31, 2013, over 2.5 million Americans have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and roughly 1.6 million of those have been discharged to veteran status. Many veterans are seeking higher education through the Post 9-11 G.I. Bill. Integration and readjustment from military to civilian life and higher education can be challenging for these individuals. Workshop participants can expect an overview of the cultural transition, promising best practices, veterans’ resources and the experiences and voices of student veterans. Participants also will explore and assess their own levels of veteran cultural competence.
Dr. Schmidt is a licensed mental health counselor and nationally certified counselor as well as project director and trainer for the Veterans Training Support Center of the Center for Learning Connections at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Wash.
The presentation will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the large community meeting room inside the Arts and Technology building on the FVCC campus. Participants should RSVP to Sherry Taylor at 756-3982 or email@example.com.
