FVCC Offers Opportunity for Challenge Course Facilitator Certification and Teacher Renewal Units

Flathead Valley Community College is offering area teachers and residents who work with groups an opportunity to complete “Group Process & Communication:  Level 1 Challenge Course Facilitation,” a non-credit course instructed by Tim Shaw, manager of the Whitefish High School Challenge Course.

The course will give participants a greater understanding of group dynamics and how to manage them by focusing on the use of low and high ropes challenge course activities and elements as its primary teaching tool.  Participants will gain an understanding of the risk management and educational purpose of challenge course programming.  The skills learned in the course can be used on or off a challenge course and may be adapted and used by anyone working with groups.

Each participant who completes the course will receive a nationally-recognized Level 1 Challenge Course Facilitator Certification for both low and high ropes course applications.  The course is available for 30 Teacher Renewal Units.

Shaw is a nationally certified challenge course facilitator.  He is currently completing a Master’s of Science in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato.  Shaw has worked as a professional outdoor educator within the United States and abroad for the last 12 years.

The class will meet from January 17 through May 1 on Tuesdays from 5-7 p.m.  The cost to enroll is $149.  For more information or to register, visit www.fvcc.edu/continuingeducation.html or call the FVCC Continuing Education Center at 756-3832.
