FVCC Hosts Free Community Lecture on History of Glacier’s Dude Ranch Days

Flathead Valley Community College invites the community to a free slideshow presentation on March 15 about the Great Northern Railroad’s promotion of Glacier National Park as a dude ranch. Tom Nelesen will present “Riding the Trails: A Look Back at Glacier’s Dude Ranch Days” at 6:30 p.m. in the large community room inside the Arts and Technology Building on campus.

Nelesen will take the audience on a trip back in time to 1926 when the Great Northern Railroad escorted guests on a five-day, 69-mile horseback tour of five of Glacier’s chalets and hotels. Nelesen developed “Riding the Trails” from Glacier National Park archives, Great Northern Railroad archives, various publications about the park and other sources of information. He has delivered the program at Many Glacier Hotel, Saint Mary Visitor Center, Lake McDonald Lodge and several other venues.
