Daily Inter Lake Publisher Wins FVCC 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award

Flathead Valley Community College’s 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Rick Weaver during the Ambassadors and Alumni of FVCC spring luncheon on March 25.  Ryan Mitchell, last year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, presented Weaver with the fourth annual award.

The award honors graduates of FVCC for their contributions and service to their communities and/or achievements in their careers.

Weaver began his career in the newspaper industry as a carrier for the Daily Inter Lake and as production manager of the Flathead Arrow, the Flathead High School student newspaper.  Weaver graduated from FVCC in 1973 before transferring to The University of Montana to achieve a bachelor’s degree in history.  Following college, he accepted a job with the Daily Inter Lake starting as an assistant circulation director and rising through the years to the role of publisher of newspapers in Havre, Bozeman and Idaho.  In 2010, he returned to his native hometown of Kalispell and was hired as publisher of the Daily Inter Lake where he remains today.

Weaver was awarded the Montana Newspaper Association’s Master Editor/Publisher Award for lifetime contributions to the newspaper industry in Montana.  In addition to his career achievements, Weaver has served on the boards, often in leadership positions, of multiple organizations including the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Rotary, United Way, The University of Montana Alumni Association, the Montana Newspaper Association, Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, and Montana West Economic Development.  He currently serves on the FVCC Alumni Council and is a member of the FVCC Ambassadors and Alumni.

According to the nomination, a 1968 newspaper ad published in the Daily Inter Lake listed Weaver as one of the “young men and women most likely to succeed.”

“Now, after returning to his hometown after many years away, Weaver is leading the Daily Inter Lake during a period of change and transition and has a vision of ensuring that the newspaper remains a vital community partner in the years ahead,” stated the nomination.
