Center to Open February 4

The Flathead Valley Community College Early Childhood Center will begin registering children next week by scheduled appointments only. The state-of-the-art 7,140 square-foot-facility will serve as a learning lab for FVCC students pursuing careers in early childhood education, elementary education, psychology, human services and social work. The curriculum that will be used was developed in conjunction with the college’s Early Childhood Education program and will be taught by highly-qualified teachers. The Center is open to infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children. The Center is giving FVCC students enrolled in nine college credits or more priority to register their children. Registration for students will take place January 30, and appointments can be scheduled by calling Laurie Peiffer at 756-3991. Financial assistance is available to those students through the FVCC Financial Aid Office. The Center expects to have remaining space available for community members to register their children. Registration for community members will take place January 31 and February 1 by appointment only. Appointments can be scheduled by calling Peiffer at 756-3991. 22 January 2008 - FVCC ANNOUNCES SPRING 2008 WHITEFISH CREDIT UNION COMMUNITY PRIDE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Seven Flathead Valley Community College students were named spring 2008 recipients of Community Pride Scholarships sponsored by Whitefish Credit Union. The following students will receive scholarship awards ranging from $200 to $400 in awards totaling $2,100 for the spring 2008 semester at FVCC.

From Columbia Falls – Nathan Schaff, pursuing an Associate of Science transfer degree with an interest in biochemistry; and Natalie Valov, pursuing an Associate of Science transfer degree toward her career goal of becoming a registered nurse;

From Kalispell – Barbara Cook, pursuing studies toward an Associate of Arts transfer degree in education with plans to become an art teacher; and Tracy Lost-Bear, pursuing an Associate of Arts transfer degree with an emphasis in social work; and

From Whitefish – Haylie Chapman, pursuing an Associate of Science transfer degree toward her career goal of becoming a nurse practitioner; Joshua Hirsch, pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in surveying; and Christopher Jermeay, pursuing a Certificate of Applied Science in Personal Training, as well as studies toward achieving his career goal of becoming a dentist.

This is the thirteenth year Community Pride Scholarships have been awarded to permanent residents of Flathead, Lake and Lincoln Counties. Throughout this successful program, Whitefish Credit Union has awarded $59,145 in scholarships to 189 students enrolled at Flathead Valley Community College. Community Pride Scholarship criteria include financial need, potential for academic and career success and letters of recommendation from a non-family member such as a teacher, counselor or employer. The amount of individual scholarship awards varies. Funds are intended to support tuition, fees and book expenses, although tutoring and child care are also considered.
