Enrolling in an extended learning course at FVCC means that you join hundreds of other students taking advantage of this opportunity.  Extended learning courses have been developed to provide for the educational needs of our students.  Our courses are delivered via online, interactive telecourse or hybrid formats.  The handbook will help guide you to success in your pursuits and introduce you to the people and resources at FVCC.

What is an extended learning course?
Extended learning courses have been designed to fill the needs of busy people who desire to continue their education.  The convenience of extended learning is the major reason students choose these types of classes.  For the most part, there are three types of extended learning courses:

  • Online Courses – these courses are contained wholly online through internet connection.  Students can enter and work on their classes anytime during the day or night.  There are established deadlines that must be met for such things as assignments, tests and projects just as in a face-to-face course.
  • Interactive Telecourses (ITV) – these are courses presented over an interactive television network between FVCC and partners at other locations.  Instructors teach their normal classes which are broadcast live to other sites where distance learners join the class.  All transmissions are live and interactive.
  • Hybrid Courses – these are courses that are part face-to-face and part online.  The amount of time spent face to face and online is determined by individual instructors.

Extended learning courses meet the same standards as our traditional, face-to-face courses.  They differ in that they represent a different delivery method and require students to be more responsible for their learning.  See the handbook section on "How to be Successful" to see if this style of learning is right for you.
