Running Start - Steps to Apply

At Flathead Valley Community College we offer the Running Start program to students who are 16 years or older and are at Junior or Senior status.  We have agreements with the following area high schools: Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Flathead, Glacier, Libby, Lincoln County, Troy, Whitefish, Home Schools, and Private Schools.  If you are a student from another high school, please contact Beth Kelly at (406) 756-3847 or email ekelly@fvcc.edu to discuss arranging an agreement.

The Steps
Complete the steps below and join our team at Flathead Valley Community College!

  1. Complete a Running Start Application
  2. Provide a high school transcript
  3. Submit health records (if taking 6 or more credits)
  4. Complete a Placement Test
  5. Meet with your advisor
  6. Register for classes

Apply to FVCC

The application starts the process!

  • You must complete both the Running Start application and a Non-Degree Application For Admission (PDF).
  • Obtain a Running Start application from your high school counselor.  This application must be signed by your high school counselor, parent or guardian, FVCC representative, and yourself.  
  • Be sure to seek advice from your high school counselor regarding course applicability and credit equivalency.

Transcripts

  • Arrange to have an high school transcript sent or dropped off at Flathead Valley Community College Admissions & Records Office.
  • You can obtain your transcript from your high school guidance office.

Official Health Records

Arrange to have official health records sent or dropped off to the Flathead Valley Community College Admissions & Records office if you are planning on taking 6 or more credits.

  • Please provide official health records from doctor, school, or health clinic showing dates for TWO MMR immunizations (measles, mumps, rubella).
  • FIRST immunization must have been given AFTER first birthday.

Placement Test

Contact our Learning Center to arrange a time to complete your placement test located in LRC 129.

  • $10 one-time testing fee is payable at the Business Services Office
  • All Running Start students MUST take the placement test.

Advisor

After you have completed your placement test, make an appointment with an academic advisor in the Learning Center.  Your advisor needs to sign your Running Start application and registration form.

Registration

Congratulations!  You are ready to register for classes at Flathead Valley Community College.

Remember, you must have a complete admissions file and have met with an advisor before registering for classes.
