Frequently Asked Questions

What is Running Start?

The Running Start program provides eligible high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to get an affordable “running start” on their college education at half the cost of tuition.  Students participating in the Running Start program can choose to take courses for dual-credit or college credit only.

How can I get started?

You need to make an appointment with your guidance counselor to pick up a Running Start application and to seek advice regarding course applicability and credit equivalency.  If you are home schooled, you can obtain a Running Start application by calling (406)756-3847 or stopping in the Admission and Records Office.

What steps do I need to take?

The applications start the process, but remember to take the next five steps to be admitted as a Running Start student at Flathead Valley Community College.

How much does it cost?

Flathead Valley Community College Running Start students pay the full amount of fees and are given a fifty-percent discounted rate on tuition for up to 10 credits per semester. Students or their parents will be responsible for all costs involved in attending FVCC.

What if I'm home schooled?

We welcome home schooled students!  Our home school students are very successful in the Running Start program.  If you are a home school student, you need to go through the same steps to apply.  The only difference is your parent will act as your high school counselor.

How do I know what classes to take?

Every Running Start student is required to take the COMPASS test.  This is a placement test that will help you and your advisor choose the appropriate level of classes you should register for.

What classes can I take for high school graduation requirements?

Flathead Valley Community College allows each high school to determine the credit equivalency for courses taken at the college level.  Be sure to seek advice from your high school counselor regarding course applicability and credit equivalency.

Am I considered a college student?

Yes!  As a Running Start student, you will be both a high school student and college student.  Running Start students are held to the same academic standards as any degree-seeking student.
