New Course Numbers for Fall 2009

Transferring to other public colleges and universities in Montana just got easier!

Introducing the New Common Course Numbering System

Beginning in the fall of 2009, FVCC and other public colleges and universities in Montana will introduce a new common course numbering system.  This new method ensures courses also taught at other campuses will automatically transfer as equivalent, simplifying the transfer process for FVCC students and other college students in Montana.

Only certain subjects are affected by the new system; however, the subjects’ course content and degree requirements will remain the same.

Still not clear on what this new system means?  Check out the facts below and some of the most common Frequently Asked Questions.

  • All public colleges and universities in Montana will use the same subject abbreviations or rubrics (the letter codes that indicate the course subject), numbers, and titles for courses taught on more than one campus.
  • For students transferring to other campuses, only courses also taught at their new campuses will automatically transfer as equivalent.  All other courses will continue to transfer as electives and will be applied to course requirements at the discretion of the faculty at the new campuses.
  • Most FVCC rubrics and numbers will change as implementation moves forward.  Those changing beginning in fall 2009 semester are listed here.
  • Many familiar course titles will change.
  • Some courses may change levels (i.e., from the 100-level to the 200-level.)
  • During the transition period, the common course number chart and online catalog will be updated as changes occur.

Cross-listed courses will maintain their original cross-listed rubrics, course numbers and titles until both sets of disciplines have undergone the common numbering process.

Check out the Common Course Number Chart to view which course numbers and titles have changed.

Beginning May 2009, the online version of the 2009-2010 FVCC catalog will be updated to include the new course numbers and titles.
