FVCC Welcomes Navajo Traditionalist for Presentation and Hoop Dance

Flathead Valley Community College’s Multicultural Affairs Office will welcome Navajo traditionalist Courage Benally to campus next week for two free presentations he will deliver for the community.

Benally, a member of the Navajo Nation, will present “Walking the Red Road” May 2 at 4 p.m. in the large community meeting room inside the Arts and Technology Building.  Born and raised in Pinion, Ariz., the native artist and retired school teacher will discuss his experiences of being raised on the Navajo Indian Reservation and how “Walking the Red Road” represents a safe home environment free of alchohol and drugs.

On May 3 at 7 p.m., Benally will perform a traditional Navajo Hoop Dance in the FVCC Theatre inside the Arts and Technology Building.  The event will be accompanied with vendors selling Native American arts and crafts, fry bread and refreshments to raise funds to support the FVCC Multicultural Affairs program.

Both events are free and open to the public.  For more information about Benally, visit his website at www.nativestarbird.com.  For more information about the events, contact FVCC Multicultural Affairs Coordinator Mick Stemborski at 756-3945 or mstembor@fvcc.edu.
