Flathead Valley Community College’s Many Voices Press and Humanities Montana will welcome professor Lisa Smith of The University of Montana to deliver two presentations on the FVCC campus April 23.
Smith will present “Shakespeare’s Sonnets” at 10 a.m. in room 206 inside the Arts and Technology Building on campus. This presentation will feature Sonnet 23 as a focal point for Simon’s explication of Shakespeare’s sonnets in general. Simon also will discuss various scholars’ approaches to Shakespeare’s poems.
“The Poetry of War” will be presented at 2 p.m. in the large community meeting room inside the Arts and Technology Building. During this multi-media presentation, Simon will highlight the work of World War I poet, Wilfred Owen, and will explore works by poets from more recent conflicts including the Vietnam War and the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Simon will discuss the role of poetic “truth telling” as a means by which society can more fully understand the direct experience of military conflicts and the universal consequences of war.
Both presentations will be free and open to the public. For more information, contact Lowell Jaeger at 756-3907.
