Flathead Valley Community College will host an informational meeting on its 2012 Spring Semester in Venice program on September 28 at 4 p.m. in the Arts and Technology Building, room 144.
The meeting will introduce the benefits of studying abroad and will provide information needed to prepare to study in Venice, Italy, from January 14 to April 12, 2012. Under the leadership of FVCC Art Instructor John Rawlings, the program will provide students 18 years of age and older the opportunity to earn up to 22 college credits by participating in a program of study that encompasses language, art, theatre and Italian culture.
This year, the college is offering three $4,000 scholarships to students who require financial assistance in order to participate in the program. Each scholarship applicant is required to compose a two-page essay addressing why they wish to participate in the 2012 Semester in Venice program, their expectations of this program and how they think their expectations will be filled. Applications are available through the FVCC Financial Aid Office or by calling (406) 756-3849.
The college also is introducing a new Carnevale class for interested students who are unable to participate in the entire semester-long program. The class will take place January 31 through February 28, 2012. The class will include the History of Theatre in Venice class instructed by David Ackroyd; a one-week “History and Culture of Venice” class taught by Rawlings; guided day trips to Verona, Vicenza, Bassano, Balsano and Padua; an opera at Teatro La Fenice; a production at the Goldoni Theatre; a Vivaldi concert; a visit to a mask making studio; a live interpretation of “The Merchant of Venice” with Ackroyd and Rawlings; and all Carnevale events.
Space in the program is limited will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to secure a place in the program and can be paid at the college Business Office in Blake Hall or by calling (406) 756-3831. The final payment is due October 30, 2011. Payment plans are available and can be arranged by calling Char Brown at (406) 756-3623.
